One popular bus line broke ground for an extension today, while a troubled light-rail track picked up new opponents earlier this week. The Orange Line will soon begin work extending its dedicated bus route four miles, from Canoga Park to Chatsworth, thanks to passage, last November, of  Measure R. The new undertaking is estimated to cost $215 million — and to create up to 3,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, night schedules for Blue Line light rail service will be affected for the next four months by work needed to connect it to the new Expo Line. The latter line, which one day will link Downtown with Santa Monica, has been slowed by neighborhood activists demanding more safety concessions from the Metropolitan Transit Authority for when Expo Line trains run through minority neighborhoods between USC and Culver City. Now another group, to the west, is throwing up opposition — the L.A. Unified School District.

On Tuesday the school board voted unanimously

to object to the current design of  the Expo Line's second leg, which

runs from Culver City to the beach. The board noted that tracks would

cross too close to two elementary schools at Overland Avenue and

Charnock Road.
