Venice and Mar Vista activists fed up with noise from jets taking off and landing at nearby Santa Monica Airport will hold a “Peace and Quiet Vigil” Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. as the airport goes dark for runway maintenance.

The vigil will be held at the northwest corner of Lincoln Boulevard and Rose Avenue in Venice. Organizers, including Concerned Residents Against Airport Pollution, state that Los Angeles city Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who represents the L.A. areas that border the airport, will be attending.

Neighbors have been battling Santa Monica Airport over jet landings and take-offs, arguing that the small city airport was never designed for the kind of mid-sized, executive passenger jets that often call it home. Noise can be intense, they say, not to mention fumes and pollution from the jet engines.

SMA is scheduled to go off the grid for four days starting Sunday night and ending next Friday morning, according organizers. They want to enjoy the silence.

Concerned Residents Against Airport Pollution (CRAAP) cofounder Martin Rubin says, “We want to give residents in the neighborhoods surrounding Santa Monica Airport the opportunity to celebrate the peace that is possible when we're free of airport pollution and noise.”
