Nearly 800 animals, including horses and livestock, have been evacuated from the Sand Fire zone of northern Los Angeles County.

The creatures have been transported to the Antelope Valley Fair Grounds, Hansen Dam and Pierce College. The latter center will be closed shortly because it has only three goats and three horses, which will be transferred to the fairgrounds, according to Betsey Webster, chief deputy director of the County Department of Animal Care and Control.

Along with 345 horses, 165 goats, 11 chickens and 33 pigs, there is an undetermined number of pets, mostly dogs and cats, at mobile care facilities set up next to human evacuation centers, she said.

It's not yet clear how many animals have been lost to the 33,000-acre blaze. “I think the fire department has done a good job of evacuating animals,” Webster said.

The county has been feeding the critters on the taxpayers' dime, but if you want to help out, donations to the Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation are welcome, she said.

“We go out to get feed and and have it delivered to the sites,” Webster said.

Evacuated pets can be taken to county shelters in  Lancaster, Agoura, Castaic and Palmdale or to trailers next to evacuation centers.

VCA Animal Hospitals said in a statement that it's “offering free boarding for all pets who may have been displaced.” Find a location here.

The Sand Fire started Friday near the 14 Freeway and Sand Canyon in Santa Clarita.

The latest evacuation order covers residents of the area of Sand Canyon and Placerita Canyon roads, county fire officials said.

One body was discovered and at least 18 homes were destroyed, authorities said. Evacuations cover 10,000 homes and 20,000 people, fire officials said. About 200 commercial buildings were under threat.
