5 Hospitalized after Head-On Collision on Highway 89

PLUMAS COUNTY, CA (August 5, 2022)Nathanial Smotrys, Stephen Reikes and 3 others were injured in a head-on collision, Friday night.

The crash took place on Highway 89 just south of Sierraville. Dispatchers arrived to the scene at approximately 5:28 p.m., on July 29th.

Moreover, the collision involved a 2005 GMC Sierra, driven by Nathanial Smotrys and a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Stephen Reikes.

According to reports, Smotrys fell asleep while driving and drifted into the southbound lanes. As a result, both vehicles crashed head-on, before hitting a rock wall on the east side of the highway.

Meanwhile, witnesses and off-duty medics/deputies assisted both parties until Sierraville Fire arrived. At least five people were hospitalized for treatment of various injuries.

Both directions of Highway 89 were temporarily closed to allow for further investigations and clearing operations. Witnesses are encouraged to contact CHP at (530) 252-1900.
