Patti Smith
Horses (Arista)
I love Patti Smith, and my favorite album has to be Horses. That record is such an inspiration to me — she’s a true poet that taught me the meaning of lyrics and songwriting. The way she experiments with different genres on the album and adapts pieces of other people’s songs was really ahead of its time. It’s even more impressive that this was her debut. To this day she remains a hero of mine — she’s just such a queen and she does it all, fighting for the environment and all these important issues but still creating her art through music, poetry and books. She’s owning it. She’s always done what she’s wanted to on her own terms and how she’s wanted to do it, which is something I aspire to in my own career and life.
