Feeding of the 5000 (Crass Records)
I have spent many hours over the last 25 or 30 years considering, contemplating, and mulling over, Feeding of the 5000 by Crass. I love this record. I found it at exactly the right time. I was maybe 15 or 16. It was a cassette. I probably bought it at the record store in the mall. Probably because it looked “punk”. Unlike a lot of stuff it really, really, delivered.
The opening spoken track has affected me as deeply as any piece of art. I immediately fell in love with this beautifully articulated feminist diatribe. Directed at Jesus Christ “Down from that childish suicide.” Hell yes! Where else do you get this? The way it moves seamlessly into the second track. Everything just blasts off all rhythmically perfect right to the end!
Crass realized the potential of the new. Most “punk” music before was pretty referential to early rock & roll. Crass CRUSHED IT!! LONG LIVE CRASS!!
The Murder City Devils play with The Intelligence at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13 at the Teragram Ballroom.
