Steve Winwood

Back in the High Life (Island)

This album came out in a similar time frame to when I was recording Magic Window.  I’ve always been a fan of Steve Winwood, and Traffic’s song “I’m a Man” I covered on my first solo album Cosmo in 1972. “Higher Love” and “Freedom Overspill” are great tracks. He did “Split Decision” with Joe Walsh whom I love as well and it was  different, a fresh breath of air for the album and I really liked that.

I never did catch him touring live probably because I was living up in the mountains in Tahoe. He’s a great musician, plays guitar and Hammond B3 is his signature. He played lead guitar on some of the tracks as well, an all around great musician. It was a nice surprise to see something new coming out at the time. This album put him on the map as a solo artist, it went 3x Platinum RIAA. The follow up Roll With It was more of a straight ahead rock album. “Back In The Highlife” was a unique song with a great drum fill in it.

Former Creedence Clearwater Revival man Doug “Cosmo” Clifford released his lost album Magic Window on April 24.
