When I was living in a Lower East Side squat in the '70s, sometimes L.R. would stop by in the early evening hours and we'd go “wait for our man” uptown. One day I said, “L.R., you should write a song about standing on the corner waiting for our man.” Well, imagine my surprise when he records the song and it's called “Waiting for My Man.” I was so pissed. “He's our man, man!” I screamed at Lou as he bolted down Avenue C away from me. And it's not even a proper song! Where's the chorus? And hell, I was the one who introduced him to OUR man in the first place! I wonder whatever happened to that man. Anyway, New York in the '70s was like a jolt to the veins, har, har. Now it's a coffee-table book called New York City in the '70s . Allan Tannenbaum's photographs capture the glitz as well as the scum of the era. As photo editor of SoHo Weekly News, he covered the club scene and much more, and the book should satisfy your curiosity about what went on in those VIP lounges at the Mudd Club and Studio 54. John Lennon, Mick, Bianca, Debbie and Chris, the Ramones, Mayor Koch, Patti Smith, Kurt Russell (huh?) all show up.
