Event PickMy Body My Choice!
Burlesque is a celebration of women’s bodies– not just from an audience perspective, but from a woman’s perspective. It’s glitzy and glamorous, but the core message is about having agency over one’s physical being and sharing its beauty through movement, costume and sensual energy. So it makes perfect sense that members of the burlesque community have felt, as so many of us have, a mix of anger and loss over the Supreme Court’s recent overturning of Roe V. Wade.
“My Body My Choice” at the Three Clubs, organized by local producer and performer Miss Marquez, is raising funds for the fight. After attending the first Women’s March in 2017, Marquez formed Empowerment in Heels, a burlesque school providing “a safe space for all bodies to explore their own sexual expression.” Her shows –which usually have a political bent– have been hot tickets ever since, even when the pandemic forced many performers to move online.
The event will feature thematic performances centered around choice and power with the line-up consisting of Blue Lightning (bringing back her crucifix for Bloodmoney), Carmila Burana, C’est La Vie, Harlequin Curio, Lady Jane Sparrow, Lucky Little Lux, Mag D’Lynne, Mickie Maraschino, Miss Peggy Sioux, Mz Juicy Jones, Scarlett Lady, and Bootleg Bombshells’ Lulu Depina performing her infamous Rosemary’s Baby act.

“In the lead up to the 2018 Midterm elections, we partnered with Indivisible to make sure everyone who came to our show who was eligible to vote was registered,” says Marquez. “And now, with reproductive bodily autonomy continuously being dangerously threatened, we can’t wait to bring back My Body My Choice.”

Pre-show lounge entertainment starts at 8 p.m., with the burlesque production at 10 p.m. All proceeds will go to Yellowhammer Fund, an abortion organization that helps women in Alabama and the Deep South access abortion as well as free emergency contraceptive pills and Family Justice work.

Sat., July 16 at The Three Clubs, 1123 Vine St. eihpresentsmybodymychoice.eventbrite.com
