Longtime LA fixture Tom Petty is releasing a multi-format live anthology that spans his entire career, and includes a full set from a 1978 New Year's concert in Santa Monica. The collection brings together material from 1978-2007, chosen by Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate, from hundreds of hours of live recordings.
We're trying to wrap our head around what exactly is included in the massive endeavor, and, for that matter, what each of the configurations will consist of. Here's what we know: The most impressive package will only be available at Best Buy, and will feature:
A deluxe box set featuring 62 tracks on 5 CDs; two previously unreleased DVDs including the 1978 New Year's Eve concert from Santa Monica, CA, and the Martyn Atkins documentary 400 Days shot during the recording and tour for Wildflowers; a re-mastered vinyl of the 1976 Official Live 'Leg bootleg; and a Blu-ray audio disc featuring all 62 tracks in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound.
So there's that. Then there's also this less fancy version: a four CD set of 48 tracks. Too: "A 48 track digital album." But wait! There's more! "A seven LP vinyl box set of 51 tracks mastered directly from the uncompressed 24-bit 96K files and pressed on 180-gram audiophile quality high performance vinyl."
(yes, this is an incitement. kanye, how could you? to her?)

Press materials included a sampling of some of the cover versions that Petty and the Heartbreakers will be featuring in the collection. Among them, the theme from Goldfinger, the Zombies' "I Want You Back Again," the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil," early Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well," Booker T. and the MGs' "Green Onions," and James Brown's "Good, Good Lovin'."
As if all that's not enough, LA-based artist Shepard Fairey is designing the packages.
