We just made that up. There hasn't heretofore ever been a Big Daddy Kane day in Los Angeles -- probably because he's from New York. (We don't even know if he's ever even been given a key to the city.) But heck, you only live once, there's something powerful about grand, senatorial declarations, and it's February 3, 2009. BDK, whose player-heavy, late 80s rhymes and beats were as solid and sharp as his haircut, was one of the first rappers to make a solid play for the ladies. Kane was -- and is -- a woman-chasing man, and his rhymes made it completely clear that he could romance any member of the female persuasion with ease, grace, and his sheer manly manliness.
Big Daddy Kane is in town tonight as part of Scion's Easy 10 Filmmaker Series. A documentary about his life, called BDK and directed by Anthony Marshall, will screen, and Kane will be on hand to introduce the film and field questions from the audience. (We want to ask him about working with Dolemite -- see below.)
Which is great and everything, but that's only one of ten films screening this evening at the Landmark on Pico. We're just as excited to see East of Underground, a documentary presented by Wax Poetics and directed by LA-born filmmaker (and DJ and record collector) David Hollander. The film's about a military funk band that recorded a blistering record at the height of the Vietnam war, and how it became one of the holy grails for funk collectors.
To say nothing of hearing actor Max Perlich talk about his film, More is L.E.S.
