New York's Erick Morillo comes to Avalon Saturday for the first of a four-date residency. The house DJ has been at the forefront of big-room sounds for more than a decade, but his own aesthetic -- diva house vocals paired with massive, tribal drums -- hasn't wavered (and neither have his fans). We asked him a few questions recently:
LA Weekly: Do you agree that dance music's focus has gone back to Europe? (Why or why not?).
Morillo: Yes and no. Acts like Chuckie, Funkagenda and Afrojack are killing it on the European dance front right now. And then you've got the likes of the Swedish House Mafia, Dirty South and Fake Blood that are taking things to another level. So yes, there's certainly a lot of amazing music coming out of Europe at the moment and i would say they definitely have the 'edge'. The U.S. is also breeding some mega producers of its own. Deadmau5 can't seem to go wrong. He's a super sonic mouse! And then there's Armand Van Helden, still going strong, not to mention my boys Harry Romero and Jose Nunez who are back on top of their game. Watch out for some hot tracks from them this summer.
Do you still hang out with L.A.'s own Tommy Lee?
I don't see him much at the moment. We both travel a lot and I'm rarely in L.A. He's a great guy, will have to catch up again soon! Perhaps when I move to L.A. permanently in October ...
Jamie Foxx was reportedly wearing an Erick Morillo t-shirt over the weekend in Vegas. How does that make you feel?
Ha! He's such a talented guy, not to mention funny as f***, so why would you not want Jamie Foxx sporting your T-Shirt?
Can you name three tracks that you are rocking lately?
