The Alpha Pup Records family must never sleep. Sure, they're at an advantage considering the sheer number of creative types involved -- from members of Dublab, to the Low End Theory night at the Airliner, to subsidiary artist-run labels like Leaving Records (Matthewdavid), Magical Properties (Daedelus), and Poo-Bah (Ras G) -- but it seems like a person can't throw a stone in this city without hitting an amazing beat-fueled event put together by these guys. Well, now Brainfeeder, the Alpha Pup digital imprint founded by Flying Lotus, has a monthly and it is -- no surprise -- way cool.
In the words of Flying Lotus himself, via the label's site, "I've always wanted to see this music experienced in a way more focused form than your traditional club vibe. So we're starting Brainfeeder Sessions at the Downtown Independent. Amazing audio/visual madness with films and ideas." The second installment of Brainfeeder Sessions takes place THIS SUNDAY at, duh, the Downtown Independent theater, from 7:30 p.m. to "late."
You can take that last part to heart considering the evening's itinerary. On the rooftop, artists/beatmakers Kutmah and Teebs will be hosting a "sketchbook session," while inside, freaky guerilla VJ Dr. Strangeloop will be providing trippy visuals for music sets by Detroit's Jeremy Ellis, The Gaslamp Killer, Jogger (who've a new release out on Magical Properties) and Daedelus, billed to be performing songs from his pending Brainfeeder debut, the Righteous Fists of Harmony EP. Somewhere in there, Strangeloop is also debuting the first installment of his "Future Cinema Series," which compiles short films from contemporary auteurs around the world. All for ten bucks.
Check out the exceptionally long flier after this brief clip of Dr. Strangeloop and Flying Lotus in action at the Downtown Independent for Dublab's Labrat Matinee in May.
