“Nobody told me to sit down and shut up,” Mikaela Straus announces as King Princess on the aptly titled “Tough on Myself,” from her 2019 full-length release, Cheap Queen. But with such other song titles as “You Destroyed My Heart,” “Trust Nobody” and “Do You Wanna See Me Crying?,” the native of New York City bares her feelings more than her fangs throughout the album. King Princess does anything but sit down and shut up as she works her way through a series of vulnerable ballads and pop reveries. Even as she mulls over romantic disappointment, Straus finds the time in “Homegirl” to revel in the wonder of a new love unfolding: “And I like the way that you talk slow/Spelling my name with your tongue so you don’t have to say it.” With Kilo Kish.
