Friday, Aug. 23

A call to all aspiring film composers, orchestral musicians, mixing engineers or music editors: Tonight at the Aero, the team behind Elysium's score will lecture about how to bring movie music to life. Lead orchestrator Penka Kouneva, score recording/mixing engineer John Rodd and others will speak about the various steps in the process, as well as technological tricks that can be adapted to any production budget. Maybe catch the movie itself beforehand, then head on over at 7:30 p.m. All net proceeds go to Students Run L.A., a charity that helps at-risk kids get ready to run in the L.A. Marathon.

Then, at midnight, mix horror and humor with Friday Night Frights & Doug Benson's Movie Interruption: Evil Dead. This tradition at Cinefamily involves Benson and his friends sitting in the front-row couches with microphones and basically interjecting hilarious commentary throughout the film. Friends who've shown up in the past include Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis; it's anyone's guess who'll pop up this time. What better way to view this 2013 reboot from Fede Alvarez?

Saturday, Aug. 24

From founder-producer Alain Azoulay comes the Reel2Real Hollywood Short Film Festival, a showcase of emerging talents in a variety of genres. Some of the shorts featured also were at Cannes in May, including Becoming Lucy (a biopic about Lucille Ball). This one-day fest, at the Harmony Gold Theater, kicks off with Champagne toasts at 1:30 p.m. The first screening block starts at 2:30 p.m., followed by a reception and filmmaker meet-and-greet. Then this repeats at 5:30 with the second screening block and reception before culminating in the award ceremony at 8:30 p.m. A full day's pass is $49. For more info visit r2rhollywood.com.

Thursday, Aug. 29

Begun in 1965, the Cinecon film festival returns for its 49th year to the Egyptian Theatre. You won't see just any old black-and-white films. Here, only the rare and mostly forgotten films of the silent and early sound era are screened. This five-day annual event offers one of the top movie memorabilia shows as well, so bring some dough, and you may be able to take home a piece of film history. The dealers' rooms, where you can purchase posters, stills, DVDs and the like, plus the celebrity banquet to honor Shirley Jones (on Sept. 1 at 6:30 p.m.) both are at the Loews Hollywood Hotel. Jones will sign copies of her autobiography, Shirley Jones: A Memoir.
