Friday, Aug. 30

The film and music festival Don't Knock the Rock returns to Cinefamily with a lineup of music documentaries, live performances and DJs. Nearly all the films will feature a postscreening Q&A with the filmmakers, including one moderated by L.A. Weekly's Jeff Weiss on Saturday. Kicking off the event is Lawrence of Belgravia at 7:30 p.m. Lawrence, of U.K.'s indie pop bands Felt, Denim and Go Kart Mozart, is showcased in this doc from director Paul Kelly.

On Monday, the last day of the fest, come for a Labor Day potluck at 2 p.m. As short films and some rare footage are screened, hang out by the grill — provided by Cinefamily — and share your best dishes (e.g., not chips or soda). The patio will be open all day.

Saturday, Aug. 31

Fancy a bike ride and a movie? Join the L.A. River Regatta Club for a free screening of Wes Anderson's Rushmore at Marsh Park. The movie, in which teenager Max (Jason Schwartzman) and industrialist Herman (Bill Murray) both fall for a widowed first-grade teacher, begins at 8 p.m. but you can come as early as 6 p.m. to stake out your spot and get a head start on Brun's Creole Soul Kitchen's tasty offerings and Peddler's Creamery bicycle-churned ice cream. The Los Angeles County Bike Coalition will provide bike valet services.

Wednesday, Sept. 4

The Burbank International Film Festival opens with a celebration of Warner Bros.' 90th anniversary with a screening of The Brothers Warner at 6 p.m. on the Warner Bros. studio lot, followed by the opening-night gala reception at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant. You must buy tickets in advance online by Monday or you can't get on the guest list. This film festival includes a variety of shorts and features, including Seth Green and Michelle Trachtenberg in Sexy Evil Genius, a thriller in which a woman gets all of her ex-boyfriends to come to the same downtown Los Angeles bar, at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Thursday's screenings will be at Universal Studios, Friday and Saturday's at AMC Town Center 6 and Sunday's at Woodbury University. The closing-night awards gala is at the Castaway in Burbank. An all-access pass is $250.

Thursday, Sept. 5

Yet another film festival will be in town this week. Running today through Sept. 12, the 2013 L.A. Shorts Fest will play at Laemmle's NoHo 7 theaters. The first block of shorts includes The Tale of Timmy Two Chins, a self-reflective adventure about a teased chubby teen who discovers what it takes to be “manly,” and doc Real Change, which follows four homeless people who sell Real Change News, the Seattle street newspaper. An all-access pass will cost you $200, but it includes admission to the industry meet-ups and chats as well as all parties.
