File this under the Department of WTF: A woman who was being watched by police because of threats by a former lover was fatally stabbed — apparently by said lover — as cops sat in a patrol car outside, according to KTLA News.

The attack happened about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of South Cochran Avenue in Mid-City, said Los Angeles police Officer Bruce Borihanh. Officers responding to the attack fatally shot the suspect.

The officers were filling out paperwork in the cruiser when someone alerted them to the stabbing. Detective Gus Villanueva told KTLA that police think the man climbed to the building's roof and accessed the woman's second floor apartment through her bathroom window. It's one of those moves that makes you un-suspend disbelief at the movies, but it seems to have really happened.

The suspect was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where was pronounced dead.

Police apparently had been on the lookout for the man, who was believed to have been romantically involved with the victim in the past.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Flor Medrano. No word yet on the identity of her former lover.
