Today LA Weekly launches its body count blog, Murder Was The Case, by crime investigative reporter Christine Pelisek. It will run right here in our news blog, LA Daily, each time a homicide or murder occurs in the City of Los Angeles. To date this year, 116 people have been slain inside the Los Angeles city limits. Our body count begins on this date, May 28, 2009, with Number 116, below.

A man was shot as he was standing on the sidewalk near the corner of East 48th Place and Ascot Avenue at 8:30 pm last night, making his death the 116th homicide in Los Angeles this year. According to preliminary police reports, an unknown assailant walked up to the victim and shot him. The unidentified victim died this morning at a local hospital. There is no suspect description available at this time.
