IPSITA BASU DASGUPTAUPDATE: Los Angeles Police officials today released additional information about the shooting incident in which 19-year-old Jessie Long was killed.
According to reports, Detectives Donald Walthers and Jeff Nolte were part of a surveillance team monitoring a cell phone store in the 5500 block of South Central Avenue on August 6, when it was robbed around 2:30 p.m. A police chase followed, after the robbery suspects drove off. The suspect driver pulled to the curb in the 900 block of East 49th Street, while the surveillance team used a maneuver to block the suspects' escape. Detectives used their car for cover and ordered the suspects to surrender, according to a police statement.
One of the suspects, 18-year-old Marquise Walker, allegedly pointed a handgun at the detectives from the right rear seat of his vehicle. Both Walthers and Nolte fired at the suspects. Quantessa Wiley, 19, who was at the wheel of the vehicle was shot and critically wounded, while Long who was sitting in the front seat was fatally shot. Samuel Taylor, 18, was also shot and wounded. Walker, the alleged gunman, was not injured.
Long, Taylor and Wiley were taken to hospitals, while Long was
pronounced dead at the hospital. The three surviving suspects were arrested and
are being held in lieu of bail. The LAPD Force Investigation Division
is investigating the shooting, while the Robbery Homicide Division is
handling the robbery investigation. Police believe that the suspects
are responsible for a series of cell phone store robberies.
