Homicide investigators are still trying to figure out why a woman apparently stabbed her four-year-old son with a kitchen knife and then slit her wrists in their Highland Park home on July 18.

The two bodies were found around 9 a.m. at a home in the 300 block of Vista Place, near Garvanza Park. Police have yet to confirm whether the woman was the boy's mother. However, neighbors told NBC 4 the woman moved back into her mother's house about a year ago and may have had financial problems.

The boy has been identified by the coroner's office as Lars Sanchez. No word yet on the identity of the woman. According to the report, Sanchez died from “sharp force trauma to the neck.”

According to media reports, Sanchez had celebrated his fourth birthday three days before the brutal attack.
