According to police reports, the victim is 31-year-old Filemon Cortez. Cortez was staying at the Corona Motel, 11727 Saticoy Street in North Hollywood, when the incident occurred. Police say that Cortez met up with murder suspect Carlos Huezo, 22, and his girlfriend, when they both were checking into the motel around 7 p.m., partied with them, then got attacked by Huezo around 2:20 am. He was rushed to Providence Holy Cross where he died of his injuries 10 hours later, at 12:06 p.m.

Police suspect that Huezo saw that Cortez had a wad of money when he was checking in, and intended to rob him. The following day, the police arrested Huezo, an alleged member of the Vineland Boyz street gang.

Cortez, who is not a gang member, apparently stayed at the motel on occasion and possibly worked in the area.
