A man who was stabbed on a downtown-bound Metro Red Line train in Hollywood died last night, authorities said.

The attack was discovered when the train stopped yesterday morning at the station beneath Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, stated Steve Hymon of Metro.

… the victim, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at 6:36 p.m. yesterday at LAC+USC Medical Center.

Homicide investigators headed there last night to take over the case, Sheriff's officials said.

The victim was stabbed after “two males became involved in an altercation on a downtown-bound train” about 9:20 a.m. Monday, Hymon stated.

CBS Los Angeles reported that the altercation was between a man who was singing “aggressively” and another man, who confronted him. The victim was stabbed multiple times in the neck, the station said.

Paramedics were called to the scene, and train service through the station was suspended until 11:13 a.m. to accommodate investigators, Hymon said.

Witnesses were asked to call Sheriff's investigators at (323) 890-5500.

[Update at 3:42 p.m.]: The Sheriff's Department this afternoon identified the victim as 34-year-old L.A. resident Jose Velasco-Alvarado.

A new sheriff's narrative says this is what happened:

The victim was reportedly sitting in a seat on the train as it approached the train station. The suspect approached the victim and stabbed him one time before exiting the train and fleeing the train station.

Detectives are looking for the suspect and weapon today.
