Police launched a homicide investigation today after a woman's remains were found in a Westwood apartment that had burned in a fire, authorities said.

Cops originally said that the woman's boyfriend was a person of interest in the case, but then they backed away from that statement.

“There are people of interest that West Bureau Homicide detectives will be trying to get ahold of,” Los Angeles Police Department Officer Mike Lopez told us.

Firefighters responded to the blaze in a first-floor apartment at 10954 Roebling Ave. in Westwood at 7:05 a.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott.

One person was “sadly determined dead” after the fire was doused by 32 firefighters in 15 minutes, he said.

The cause, Scott told us, was “under investigation” by the LAFD's arson section.

The UCLA Daily Bruin described the deceased as a fourth-year student who was studying psychology and Spanish. The student newspaper says the unit that burned “belonged to several members of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.”
