The 45 mummies that will be housed inside California Science for Mummies of the World range in age from 6,000 years old — the oldest known mummy — to 300 years old. Some succumbed to diseases such as tuberculosis, others' causes of death remain unclear. The circumstances surrounding their preservation are varied, too. Some, like those found in Egypt and Peru, were intentionally mummified through several different techniques. Many others though were buried in places like bogs and cellars, where environmental circumstances led to natural mummification. Beginning July 1, visitors can view the mummies and 95 artifacts as research is conducted in this world-premiere event. Scientists from multiple disciplines will study their lives and deaths, sharing their findings as the exhibit progresses. Slowly, the stories of 45 mummies will unfold inside the museum.

Mondays-Sundays. Starts: July 1. Continues through Nov. 28, 2010
