Robert Rodriguez is back in fine form this summer with his El Rey television network, and the American Cinematheque is revisiting some of his hits through Aug. 27 as part of its series Desperado With a Camera: The Cinema of Robert Rodriguez. Kicking things off is a double feature of Sin City, the film adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novels, and From Dusk Till Dawn, the cult classic starring George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino as the criminal Gecko brothers, at the Egyptian at 7:30 p.m. There’s no better duo of films to pave the way for the upcoming release of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For on Aug. 22 and the From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series DVD/Blu-ray in September. A discussion with Rodriguez will take place between screenings.

Over at Cinefamily, there’s a free midnight sneak preview of Nicholas McCarthy’s At The Devil’s Door. The spookiness begins when a young real estate agent has to sell a house with a dark past in this horror flick, which stars Catalina Sandino (Maria Full of Grace) and Naya Rivera (Glee). Writer-director McCarthy will participate in a post-screening Q&A. Preregistration required at cinefamily.org; seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Saturday, Aug. 16

Indie Desk hosts the L.A. Neo-Noir Film Fest II. Starting at noon, the showcase of to-be-determined neo-noir movies and screenplays begins. There also will be a staged reading and an awards show for the fest winners, followed by a reception featuring Two Boots NYC Pizza. Everyone who purchases the $10 ticket at lanneff.com or a graphic novel will have the chance to win a ticket to the special 4-D screening of the Sin City sequel.

Thursday, Aug. 21

For something a little more upbeat and international, head over to the Fowler Museum for the Los Angeles premiere of Street Muse: Kenya. Meryl O’Connor’s documentary follows Gull, an American street musician, who travels to Kenya as part of a cultural outreach project. The screening starts at 7:30 p.m. Please note that due to UCLA’s water-main breakage, parking lot 4 is unavailable, so go to lot 5 via Sunset and Royce.
