This Friday through Sunday at the Egyptian Theatre, it’s FICG in L.A. — aka the Guadalajara International Film Festival. Showcasing the best of Mexican and Ibero-American films, the opening-night gala will include the U.S. premiere of Las Horas Contigo (The Hours With You), which finds Ema, who’s just found out she is unexpectedly pregnant, stuck with her estranged mother. Sunday, Sept. 7
Support Marriage Equality USA by attending the screening of Just Gender at 5 p.m. at Congregation Kol Ami. This documentary, narrated by Bebe Neuwirth, follows the lives of members of the transgender community. A panel discussion follows the screening. Tickets can be purchased at brownpapertickets.com.

Tuesday, Sept. 9
Thirty years ago, Mr. Miyagi taught us all the lesson of “wax on, wax off” — as well as some other important notions, such as honor and integrity. Celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Karate Kid at the Japanese American National Museum, starting at 6 p.m. with a reception with light refreshments. A post-screening Q&A discussion panel will include star Ralph Macchio, director John Avildsen and Pat Morita’s daughter, Aly Morita.

Thursday, Sept. 11
The Film Independent at LACMA series starts Thursday with a free, members-only screening of The Skeleton Twins, the upcoming film with Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig as estranged twins who unexpectedly reunite years later, at 7:30 p.m. Director Craig Johnson, as well as Hader and Wiig, will attend. For nonmembers, there’s a showcase of works from the Ghetto Film School Los Angeles on Monday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m., with student filmmakers present to discuss their films.

Also starting Thursday is a REDCAT project titled Gob Squad: Super Night Shot at 8:30 p.m. Four filmmakers explore the streets of downtown Los Angeles with their cameras, creating four 60-minute videos. For more info, go to redcat.org/event/gob-squad-super-night-shot.
