If you’ve always felt that you belonged with spurs on your boots and guns strapped to your hip, you should mosey over to the Los Angeles Convention Center for M7 Con 2014. Designed around John Sturges’ classic film The Magnificent Seven as well as the 1998-2000 TV series, this two-day event starts with registration at 9 a.m. and opening ceremonies at noon. Attendees can learning about the history and traditions of the Old West, see the M7 pilot and meet some of the actors from the show. Net proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project. Also kicking off on Friday is SaMo Indie 2014 at the Santa Monica Playhouse, through Oct. 5. Opening night features a block of shorts at 8 p.m., followed at 9:30 by the feature Echoes, a thriller that follows a young writer as she starts having visions. Wednesday, Oct. 8

If the recent Houdini miniseries with Adrien Brody didn’t satisfy your itch for the famed magician, you’re in luck. The Hollywood Heritage Museum is hosting an Evening @ the Barn: Houdini in Hollywood event at 7:30 p.m., which includes a screening of his silent film Terror Island, about an inventor who goes with a beautiful woman in search of her missing father and buried treasure. Jim Steinmeyer, an illusions designer, will sign two of his Houdini-related books. There also will be munchies from Grub Restaurant. Tickets to this magical evening are just $15 (discounts for Hollywood Heritage and Magic Castle members).

Thursday, Oct. 9

Through Oct. 12, the Egyptian Theatre is hosting the German Currents Film Festival, which showcases some of the best works of the past year from Germany and other German-speaking countries. Beloved Sisters, Germany’s official selection for the 2014 Best Foreign-Film Oscar, is featured on opening night at 7 p.m. In the film, two late–18th century aristocratic sisters find themselves in a love triangle with a noted poet and playwright. There will be a reception following the screening.
