Move over, Jan Švankmajer and Brothers Quay — there's a new surrealistic pillow on which to lay your heads now, and it's woven by a multimedia animator who presents two of her recent films tonight at The Birdwoman and Her Dreams: The Animated Works of Nancy Andrews. Both are shot through dreams and day-mares worthy of dementia. Behind the Eyes Are the Ears (2010) focuses on the human experience as seen through the lens of an insect; the jerky momentum is translated brilliantly through 16mm, animation, live-action and found footage. On a Phantom Limb (2009) is about Andrews' survival of a surgery that almost killed her, and how she transmuted that particular hell into a cathartic limbo world of cartoons. She'll be at the screenings, so you can ask her about what actually happened after your mind has melted from all the assorted wonderful weird.
