Luz is a throwback to 1980s-style horror, and it’s shot on 16mm to prove it. The story of a female cabdriver pursued by a demonic entity has the feel of a Cronenberg or a Zulawksi. Director Tilman Singer favors the elegant geometric compositions as the Italian masters of horror Argento and Fulci as well as the same disregard for logic and narrative coherence. Clocking in at 70 minutes, the film was a hit at the Fantasia Film Festival last year; it will enjoy a limited release before inevitably finding a cult following on the home video market.

Monica Film Center (also playing at Laemmle Playhouse 7), 1332 2nd St., Santa Monica, Fri., July 19, various showtimes; $9-$12. (310)-478-3836, laemmle.com.
