The Great Hack is a compelling documentary about the wide, wonderful world of data exploitation, a concept crystallized by the infamous Cambridge Analytica scandal. For those who need a refresher, in March of 2018 the British consulting firm was discovered to have illicitly harvested data from millions of Facebook profiles for political purposes—an impropriety that led to Mark Zuckerberg to testify in front of Congress. Directors Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim (The Square) organize the bits and pieces into a pressingly urgent narrative.  It will play in a few select theaters while appearing simultaneously on Netflix.

Monica Film Center, 1332 2nd St., Santa Monica, Wed., July 24, various showtimes; $9-$12. (310)-478-3836, laemmle.com.
