Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt is a landmark documentary about the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt — a sprawling piece of community folk art that memorialized the lives of AIDS victims. Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s 1989 film won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and features a Dustin Hoffman narration and Bobby McFerrin score. Produced for HBO, the film has been preserved by the Academy Film Archive, Milestone Film & Video, and UCLA Film & Television Archive in cooperation with the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project. The restoration will have its premiere at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater with Epstein, Friedman, and producer Bill Couturié in person. Sections of the massive quilt will be on view in the lobby.
