In Semper Fi, Jai Courtney plays Cal, a straight-laced cop who holds a second job in the Marine Corps Reserve. After his brother gets in a brawl that puts him in prison, Cal’s loyalty to the law is put to the test. Enlisting the help of his Marine buddies, he resolves to organize a scheme to liberate his brother from the slammer. “Semper fi” means “always faithful,” and it’s a clever title for this morally tricky thriller about family and the limits of honor. Director Henry-Alex Rubin (who garnered an Oscar nomination for the documentary Murderball) co-wrote the screenplay with former army Captain Sean Mullin. Laemmle Music Hall, 9036 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, Fri., Oct. 4, various showtimes; $9-$12. (310) 478-3836, laemmle.com.
