Joe Dante is a national treasure—a filmmaker of considerable wit who crafts trenchant social satires from the most entertaining elements of popular culture. Gremlins, his most enduringly popular film, is a sharply funny teen horror comedy written by Chris Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg about a cute critter that spawns a spate of devilish creatures that proceed to wreak havoc in an all-American town. A holiday classic too good to be watched only at Christmastime, the film will receive a special 35th anniversary matinee screening courtesy of Laemmle, followed by a Q&A with Dante. Laemmle Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre, 8556 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, Sun., July 12, 3 p.m.; $15. (310) 478-3836, laemmle.com.
