All hopes of recovering the preview cut of Erich von Stroheim’s 1924 masterpiece Greed have died out long ago, but what remains is still one of the greatest films of the silent era. A crisp salute to The Autry for running a 35mm print from the Warner archives as part of their Saturday afternoon film series The Silent Treatment, curated by Brandee Cox and Steven Hill. An adaptation of Frank Norris’s novel McTeague, the film follows the fate of a San Francisco dentist who wins the lottery and loses his wife to the deadly sin. The journey takes him to Death Valley in one of the most famous climaxes in American cinema. This screening should tide us all over until we get an official DVD or Blu-ray release. (Criterion Collection, are you listening?) Wells Fargo Theater at Autry Museum of the American West, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Griffith Park; Sat., Sept. 21, 2 p.m.; Free with museum admission.
