Eminent film critic and cultural historian J. Hoberman’s new tome surveys the ideologies of the Hollywood blockbusters produced during the Reagan years. UCLA has curated a two-day series to accommodate this vital new work, titled Make My Day: Movie Culture in the Age of Reagan. The series kicks off with a double feature composed of First Blood and They Live. The former explores the psychology of a Vietnam vet (Sylvester Stallone, in one of his most iconic roles), while the latter imagines a society controlled by a race of clandestine, capitalistic aliens. Hoberman will sign copies of his book in the lobby beginning at 6:30 p.m.

UCLA’s Billy Wilder Theater, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood; Fri., Dec. 6, 7:30 p.m.; $10. (310) 206-8013, cinema.ucla.edu.
