Ambition is a low-budget thriller directed by New Line Cinema founder Bob Shaye. Having produced the entire run of Nightmare on Elm Street movies, Shaye knows a thing or two about horror, and this tale of an aspiring violinist (Sonoya Mizuno) pushed to the brink of insanity is sure to draw comparisons with other recent psychodramas that place art front and center (Black Swan, et al). Lin Shaye of the Insidious series — and the director’s sister — pops in for a cameo. Arena Cinelounge, 6464 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood; Fri., Sept. 20, various showtimes; $16.
