For 40 Years of UCLA Student Filmmaking, archivists Jan-Christopher Horak and Maya Montañez Smukler have mined UCLA’s vault to curate a series that celebrates the diversity of student work over the last four decades. The first weekend of this four-weekend series examines the 1950s through the early 1960s, a period that saw the first generation of UCLA student filmmakers attempt to find their voices through the medium. One of the films  —John Vicario’s Shoppers Market — has been preserved by the Academy Film Archive.

UCLA’s Billy Wilder Theater, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood; Fri., Nov. 15- Sat., Nov. 16, 7:30 p.m.; $10. (310) 206-8013, cinema.ucla.edu.
