If the last five years are any indication, clear your calendars and get out your Thomas Guide for this monthlong traveling celebration of the possibilities of dance on film. The Los Angeles Times dubbed the 2006 Dance Camera West Festival one of the year’s top 10 dance events, and the 2007 festivities promise an equally dazzling selection. DCW opens downtown this weekend with REDCAT hosting three programs of experimental short films from around the world. On Thursday the action moves to Hollywood, where the Directors Guild is the venue for the Choreography Media Honors, honoring the men and women behind the moves that entertain us in the movies, television, commercials and music videos. Dress for the red carpet; enjoy the awards and the film clips before the post-event reception. Next Saturday the action moves even farther west when Cheviot Hills Recreation Center becomes an outdoor theater with a free screening featuring local choreographers and dancers. Picnics are encouraged and jackets are a good idea; West L.A. can get nippy after the sun sets. Three more weeks of events follow. Watch this space for weekly updates, or check out the Web site, www.dancecamerawest.org, for a complete list of events. Short films at REDCAT, W.
