What Makes the Most Comfortable Mattress?

Comfort can be a subjective quality, but there are a few things that every good mattress should have:

    • Sturdy support: If your mattress doesn’t provide adequate support, you’re likely to wake up with a sore back.

 

  • Pressure-relieving materials: Pressure points build up as our body pushes down on the mattress. If the bed does not alleviate these pressure points, they can cause you pain.

 

  • Breathable, cooling materials: Some materials can hold onto body heat, which is why many manufacturers infuse cooling agents.
  • Motion isolation: Couples will find that a bed that lets them feel their partner’s every movement is not a bed that promotes a good night’s sleep.

Types of Comfortable Mattresses

We’ll give a brief overview of the five types of mattresses to help you decide which is right for you.

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses contain a steel coil support system sandwiched between thin layers of foam and fabric. Most of us have slept on one at some point in our lives, so we’re highly familiar with its bouncy nature. It remains a common mattress choice, and you’ll find one at most mattress stores and even at a few furniture stores.

However, many owners find that an innerspring mattress can’t provide the full comfort they need. They’re consistently low rated by customers when it comes to relieving pressure and pain. 

Part of the trouble is how quickly an innerspring mattress can lose support. It’s the type of mattress most prone to sagging as its coils wear out, with some sagging in as little as three years. Once a mattress sags, the lack of support strains your body and develops into pain.

If you want a comfortable innerspring bed, try looking for a pillow top mattress. You’ll find two types, the standard pillow top and the Euro top. A pillow top is sewn on top of the mattress, leaving a visible gap between the mattress and pillow top. A Euro top is sewn underneath the mattress cover, creating a uniform appearance.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses initially gained popularity as a softer alternative to innerspring mattresses. In recent years, demand has skyrocketed as the bed-in-a-box trend became mainstream with customers forgoing shopping in mattress stores to purchase their new beds online, shipped directly to their home. With both comfort and convenience as key selling points, it’s no surprise that memory foam mattresses are now a favorite among consumers. 

Memory foam reacts to pressure and heat, so when you lie down, it quickly gives way and molds around your body. This full-body support prevents pressure points from building up, leaving your body feeling limber rather than sore and stiff in the morning. Memory foam is also one of the best materials for limiting motion transfer because it absorbs movement.

Traditional memory foam, however, has two drawbacks. The first is its tendency to retain heat, which most manufacturers solve by mixing in cooling materials. You may see cooling gels, copper, graphite, ceramic, titanium, charcoal, and green tea extract infusions as solutions for wicking away heat.

The other drawback is what’s known as off-gassing. Most memory foam mattresses have a noticeable smell when first unboxed because of volatile organic compounds from production. These compounds break down at room temperature, and the smell usually vanishes within a week, if not a few days.

A memory foam mattress is one of the more accessible types of mattresses, with the best mattresses in a box available at all price points. 

Latex Mattresses

Like memory foam, latex molds itself to you when you lie down. However, latex naturally keeps cooler than memory foam, especially because many manufacturers aerate the foam for added breathability. Hot sleepers may want to consider a latex mattress if they want a bed that also relieves pressure.

Latex also usually feels firmer than other types of foam. For extra cushioning, many manufacturers add a memory foam layer or a plush pillow top.

You’ll find natural latex and synthetic latex mattresses when you shop. Natural latex is made from rubber tree sap. And synthetic latex is an imitation made from organic chemical compounds. 

Of the two, natural latex is more durable. However, synthetic latex is a good choice for anyone with a latex allergy.

The average all-latex mattress costs more than $2,500. Many consider the high price tag a worthwhile investment since a natural latex mattress can last up to 15 years.

Hybrid Mattresses

If you can’t decide between the cradling feel of a memory foam mattress and the bouncy lift of an innerspring, consider a hybrid mattress. In a hybrid mattress, a layer of pocketed coils supports 2 to 3 inches of contouring foam. Usually, the top is memory foam, but you’ll also find poly-foam and latex foam hybrids.

Hybrids often compensate for the weaknesses of an innerspring and an all-foam mattress. Hybrid mattresses keep cooler than a foam bed, as air can flow freely between its coils. A hybrid design also provides more pressure relief and motion isolation than an innerspring mattress.

As one of the most comfortable mattresses to buy, a hybrid mattress’s price tag is its greatest drawback. It relies on a mix of high-quality materials, which drives up production costs. The mattress type is at lower risk of sagging than an innerspring mattress. However, it’s not uncommon for hybrids to sag after several years of use.

Airbeds

If you want a comfortable air mattress, then you’ll want to look past the blow-up models you might bring on a camping trip. No, if you want a quality airbed, you should look at the many self-inflatable and adjustable air mattresses on the market.

A high-end airbed has one or more air bladders topped with a foam comfort layer. You can adjust the airbed’s feel with the push of a button, adding or removing air with a built-in pump.

Many airbeds incorporate smart technology to monitor your sleep habits. It tracks your breathing, heart rate, movement, and more and compiles the data into a report. You can look at your sleep data daily or over a more extended period.

Airbeds are one of the more expensive types of mattresses since they rely on various technological parts to work. Many cost more than $2,500. They can also be prone to mechanical problems, which can require expensive replacement parts to fix.

Choosing a Comfortable Mattress Firmness

Mattresses can range from soft to medium to firm, with variations in between. If you’re shopping at a showroom, you can lie down and get an idea of how each firmness feels. When shopping online, however, you only have a description of the mattress’s firmness to consider. 

Is it possible to choose the correct firmness without trying a single mattress out? Yes, it is, if you keep two things in mind:

  • How your favorite sleeping position would feel on the mattress
  • How much your weight will press down on the mattress 

Sleeping Position

People usually favor one of three positions when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Most of us prefer to lie on our side, but some of us fall asleep quicker on our backs or stomach.

Side Sleeping

You may feel healthier if you sleep on your side. Side sleeping reduces your chances of snoring and developing sleep apnea by preventing the collapse of tissues at the back of your throat. It can help you control acid reflux symptoms too. And sleeping on the right side can alleviate pressure on your heart.

However, to get the full benefits of side sleeping, you need a soft mattress with room for your hips and shoulders to sink. If the mattress can’t fully conform around your hips and shoulders, pressure may build up and leave you feeling sore the next day. Try a soft to medium feel if you’re looking for a comfortable mattress for a side sleeper.

Back Sleeping

When you lie down on your back, your posture is similar to how it would be if you were standing straight. This is why back sleeping is one of the best positions for preventing back pain.

However, you have an increased chance of snoring and developing sleep apnea because gravity pushes down on your throat’s soft tissues. Sleep paralysis is also more likely to happen when you’re lying on your back. Scientists are still trying to understand why.

The most comfortable mattress for a back sleeper will provide firm lumbar support but possess enough plush to relieve pressure points in your back. A medium-firm to firm mattress can provide a good night’s rest.

Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping is the least common sleeping position. And many health experts say it’s the worst sleep position for your neck and spine alignment. So, if you’re a stomach sleeper, you might want to try sleeping on your back or side instead. 

When you lie down on your stomach, gravity tends to push it down into the mattress. This causes your spine to unnaturally curve, which can eventually lead to chronic back pain. You’re also likely to misalign your neck since you’ll have to twist your head to the side for breathing. 

The easiest way to break out of your stomach sleeping habit is by sleeping with an obstruction that prevents you from rolling onto your stomach. It can be a firm pillow or a tennis ball attached to the front of your sleepwear.

Have you tried other positions, but you can only fall asleep on your stomach? Then consider a firm mattress that will push up on your stomach and keep your spine in place. You can also slip a pillow under your belly for added support.

Combination Sleeping

Some of us don’t stay in one position but move throughout two or three in the night. Those people are known as combination sleepers. Why combination sleepers switch positions is not known, though it may be to improve blood flow and reduce pressure build-up. 

A comfortable mattress for a combination sleeper will keep your spine neutral, regardless of position. Look for a medium mattress as the perfect balance between softness and support. Targeted back support can ensure your spine stays aligned, no matter your position.

Body Weight

Your body weight determines how much pressure you put on your mattress. Naturally, the more you weigh, the more you press down.

Do you weigh more than 230 pounds? Then you should look for a firmer mattress than what we just recommended based on your sleeping position. For example, a side sleeper who weighs more than 230 pounds might want to try a medium bed. You’ll only want to choose a mattress on the softer end of the spectrum if it provides enough responsiveness so you don’t sink too deep into the mattress. 

And if your weight is under 130 pounds, you should look for a softer mattress. That way, the bed will be able to conform to your body for pressure relief.

Choose a Comfortable Mattress Size

Size may not be your first consideration when you’re shopping for the most comfortable mattress. However, a too-small mattress can leave you feeling cramped or even cause you to roll off the bed. You don’t want to sleep with your feet or arms dangling over the edge either.

There are six standard sizes to consider when shopping:

  • A twin mattress, which measures 38 inches by 74 inches
  • A twin XL mattress, which measures 38 inches by 80 inches
  • A full mattress, which measures 54 by 75 inches
  • A queen mattress, which is 60 inches by 80 inches
  • A king mattress, which is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long
  • A California king mattress, which is 72 inches wide and 84 inches long

Single sleepers can sleep comfortably on any of these sizes. Couples should decide between a queen and king size mattress since they are the only options that provide the personal space two people need. 

Some couples do share a full size mattress. However, we can’t recommend it since sharing it provides you with about 27 inches of sleeping space per person. That’s about how wide a crib mattress is, and it’s also 11 inches narrower than a twin size mattress.

Couples may also want to consider the benefits of investing in a split size mattress. Let’s say you like a soft mattress while your partner needs a firm bed to sleep on or vice versa. Now, the two of you could compromise with a medium feel mattress, but that might mean sacrificing quality sleep.

Instead, you could share a split size bed without compromising on comfort. Split mattresses are separated into halves, allowing each partner to choose their favorite firmness. Split king mattresses are the most common type. You can also find split queen and split Cal king mattresses.

You also want to gauge how much space a mattress would take up in your bedroom. Setting up a king size mattress in a smaller bedroom is more likely to leave you feeling claustrophobic than relaxed, for example.

How Much Should I Spend on a Comfortable Mattress?

A good night’s sleep shouldn’t break the bank. Some mattresses may cost $3000 and more. However, you shouldn’t have to spend that much money to find one that’s comfortable.

Before we talk about setting a budget, let’s discuss how a mattress’s price is determined. A mattress’s price is affected by:

  • The type of materials it contains: Some materials are more expensive to produce than others, such as natural latex and other organic materials.
  • The amount of material the mattress includes: Larger mattresses cost more to produce, as do mattresses with high-density materials.
  • A generous sleep trial: Mattress brands know that a certain percentage of mattresses will be returned, so they factor that expected loss into the final price.
  • Overhead costs: Mattress stores and showrooms have staffing and storefront costs that many online businesses do not. This is why the best online mattress brands can afford to offer lower prices. However, some mattress stores are worth visiting only if they are brand-owned and offer direct-to-consumer products, which cuts out the middleman. 

For a queen size mattress, we recommend budgeting up to $2,500 if you’re considering more expensive options such as hybrids and latex mattresses. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget and are looking at less costly but still comfortable memory foam beds, we suggest limiting yourself to the $500 to $1,500 price range.

Consider the Sleep Trial, Return Policy, and Warranty Period 

In this era of online shopping, you don’t always have the luxury of trying out a mattress at your local store before you buy it. Even if you do, an entire night on a new mattress can feel very different from the few minutes you spent on a showroom model.

A sleep trial or a return policy protects you from choosing an uncomfortable mattress by giving you the means to return it. A warranty acts as a guarantee that your mattress should be comfortable for years to come. It also ensures the company will repair or replace your mattress if its construction is faulty.

Sleep Trial

A sleep trial ensures you won’t end up stuck with an uncomfortable mattress. With a sleep trial, you have a few months to try out the mattress at home. If you don’t like the mattress, you can exchange it for another mattress model or return it for a full refund.

Many companies ask that you try sleeping on your mattress for 30 days before you return the mattress, however. This is because your body may need time to let go of bad postures you developed while sleeping on your old mattress. Even if your new mattress is objectively more comfortable, it may not feel that way until you’ve finished adjusting to it. 

Return Policy

Frequently a return policy is bundled in with a sleep trial. If the mattress doesn’t include a sleep trial, the return policy will be shorter. It can still offer you the chance to test out the mattress at home.

It’s a good idea to read through the return policy before you purchase a mattress. Most will only accept a mattress back if it’s in good condition. A few companies will only process a return if the mattress is unopened or arrived damaged.

Warranty Period

During the warranty period, the company must replace or repair the mattress if it develops a structural defect. Most companies cover sagging beyond a certain depth, cracks in the foam, coils poking out of the mattress, and a damaged cover. Warranties do not cover expected wear and tear from regularly sleeping on the mattress.

The company will deny your warranty claim if you fail to meet certain conditions, such as keeping the mattress on a supportive foundation and protecting it from liquid damage. A mattress protector or encasement will prevent damage from accidents and maintain your warranty. Warranty claims also require a proof of purchase, so put your receipt in a place you’ll remember.

How to Make a Mattress More Comfortable

Perhaps you purchased a mattress that felt perfectly fine during the sleep trial. However, some time has passed, and it’s no longer as comfortable as it once was. And you’re not in the market for a replacement mattress just yet. 

What you’re looking to do is make the most of an uncomfortable mattress. There are a few simple steps you can take until you’re ready to replace your mattress.

Toppers

The best way to change a mattress’s feel for the better is with a topper. Toppers slip on top of the mattress like an added layer. They give the bed a few extra inches of firm or soft foam, usually between 2 to 5 inches. You can even smooth out indentations with a topper. 

Toppers often cost a few hundred dollars, which is a fraction of what a quality mattress can cost.

Rotation

Mattresses develop indentations as you lie down. As materials age, it becomes more difficult for the mattress to spring back to its original shape. This kind of sagging is covered under most warranties, but only to a certain extent. Some will only repair or replace the mattress if the sagging or indentations exceed 2 inches, but your mattress will be uncomfortable to sleep on well before that point.

If you find yourself sleeping in a pit or rolling toward the middle of your mattress, try rotating it. You should find yourself lying down on an area that’s seen less wear and tear, and therefore feels more supportive.

Pillows

If you’re getting a miserable night’s sleep, the cause may not be an uncomfortable mattress. It could be that you need a new pillow instead. If your pillow isn’t supportive enough, you may wake up with a stiff neck, headaches, or even back pain.

The most comfortable pillows should cushion your head and neck. You want to avoid sleeping with your shoulders on the pillow since it may leave your neck unsupported. Side sleepers need thicker pillows than back or stomach sleepers since they have the largest gap between their necks and the mattress.

Adjustable Beds

Whether you are trying out a mattress in a store or shopping sight unseen with online sellers, we have one piece of advice: Always read customer reviews before you buy a mattress.

You should be able to find reviews on the company website and third-party websites such as Amazon and Google. It’s a red flag if you can’t find customer reviews, or you only see 4- and 5-star reviews on the company website. Read through all the different reviews to get a better sense of what people liked and disliked about the product, giving you a better sense of whether or not it’ll truly meet your needs too. 

You may also be able to find video reviews on YouTube or Instagram. A good video review can let you see firsthand how a mattress adjusts to a person’s movements.

Mattress reviews can give you an idea of how a bed feels without lying down on it. And if you do have a showroom model to test out, reviews can still inform you about how comfortable a mattress will be after the first few nights. Try to find reviews from customers who have owned a bed for at least a few months.
