Opened in the summer of 1994 by Mr. Dan and Paul V (of the legendary Dragstrip 66), Cavern Club Theatre was initially created as a home for the live drag soap-opera-sitcom “The Plush Life” (which ran from 1994 to 2002). Dan took the reins booking the theater soon after, and today Cavern, located below Casita del Campo restaurant in Silver Lake, remains a mainstay of alternative, queer and drag guerilla theater. It’s tiny, but that’s part of its charm. Big, bodacious — and usually cross-dressed — personalities take over the basement space weekly, and the intimate setup allows shows like Jackie Beat’s annual holiday spectacles, Jer Jer Bones’ “Telekinesis” cabarets, and “Chico’s Angels’” sassy episodic adventures to shine in all their garish, glam-“gurl” glory. Make a night of it with pre- or post-show dinner and drinks (as spicy and salty as the performers) at the Casita, and you’ve got a hot tamale two-fer indeed. 1920 Hyperion Ave., Silver Lake.
