Don't all cheer at once, but rain is in the forecast this week.

That's after the possibility of “record heat” again today, the National Weather Service says. This after a rare February heat wave gave us some record-breaking high temperatures last week.

The NWS said in a statement that nighttime temps could remain “above 70 degrees” while highs today and tomorrow are expected to be “well into the 80s” in some parts of Southern California. The temps will “likely” break at least some records today and Tuesday, federal forecasters said.

But an upper-level low-pressure system is headed our way Wednesday night, they said. It will bring “the chance of rain late Wednesday into Thursday,” the NWS said.

Private forecaster AccuWeather put it this way:

The storm system will also bring the chance for some rain on Wednesday night and Thursday. However, this will likely be a lighter rain as the steadier rain and mountain snow focuses on Northern California.

It'll be quick, if it happens at all.

“Fair skies, with a slight warm-up, are expected by next weekend,” the NWS says.

Even if we get precipitation from this system, questions about what happened to El Niño's much-hyped storm train remain. The weather phenomenon is defined by warm waters along the equatorial Pacific that sometimes help push a wet jet stream into Southern California. Sometimes.

With El Niño, which has been known to do its worst work in March, there's still time.
