More than 97% of daily COVID-19 cases in L.A. County are coming from people who are not fully vaccinated, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

Ferrer, who serves as Director of Public Health in L.A. County, gave her weekly COVID-19 update Monday, saying that since vaccinations began being administered in L.A., “almost every single” case of COVID-19 has come from people who were not fully vaccinated.

“…Very few vaccinated people are getting infected,” Ferrer said. “When you see our case numbers, I can just tell you that almost every single one of the cases that I report every day are people who are not fully vaccinated. So you have a very good idea about the people who are getting infected on a daily basis here in L.A. County because those are the numbers I’m announcing and well above 97% of those folks are folks who are not fully vaccinated.”

As of May 21, more than 4.1 million L.A. County Residents have received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccines and more than 5.4 million receiving their first dose. More than 76% of people older than 65 have been fully vaccinated, while 46% of adults between ages 16 and 64 have received full vaccinations.

The county did announce Saturday that it would align itself with the state’s decision to “fully” reopen the economy, without restrictions, on June 15 and will release a health officer order in the future to reflect that.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that upon reopening in June, that mask mandates and capacity limits in businesses would be lifted. The exceptions on masks may be for travel, which the CDC has recommended stay in place, as well as some densely populated events.

L.A. County reported 153 new cases of COVID-19 Monday and four deaths connected to COVID-19. There are currently 319 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19, all metrics which Ferrer referred to as “low and stable.”
