With looming budget cuts ahead, the Board of Library Commissioners is voting today on whether or not to reduce the Los Angeles libraries six day a week schedule to only five days to a week. Advocates for the proposal are saying that a reduction in service hours is necessary to accommodate the reduction of workforce, which will be cut by 28 percent under the city's new fiscal-year budget.

Branch libraries in adjacent communities will be paired together and operate on a “dual-track service schedule” which “will help mitigate the loss of the 'sixth day' of library service for library patrons within adjacent communities and meet demand for access to library service on weekends and Mondays,” according to commissioners' proposal.

Staff will rotate among paired branches and will get alternating Saturdays off. If approved, the new schedule will go into effect on July 6.
