Flags will be flown in half-staff across the country in honor of the mass shooting victims in Monterey Park, until Thursday, Jan. 26.

President Joe Biden’s order applies to the White House, all public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations and federal naval vessels.

Embassies and consular offices overseas will also fly their U.S. flags at half-staff.

“Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in last night’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park,” Biden said in a statement Sunday. “I’m monitoring this situation closely as it develops, and urge the community to follow guidance from local officials and law enforcement in the hours ahead.”

The mass shooting occurred around 10:22 p.m. Saturday, at a ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park, resulting in 10 dead and 10 more wounded. The studio’s location remained open after the city’s Lunar New Year festival that occurred earlier in the day.

While the shooting suspect, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, fled the scene, and approached another dance studio in the neighboring city of Alhambra. That is where two citizens wrestled away his weapon and he fled again.

His white van was flagged down by police in the city of Torrance, and after a lengthy standoff, officers made its way in, finding Tran dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“There’s going to be more information that we’ll be putting out about the specifics,” Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna said in a press conference Sunday. “But right now, I’m here to report that the suspect responsible for this tragedy is no longer a threat.”
