A woman who authorities allege buried her newborn baby in an asphalt hole along a Compton bike path was charged with suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced the felony counts against Porche Laronda Washington, 33, yesterday afternoon.

“A 3-day-old baby girl was found abandoned in a hole near a Compton riverbed,” the office said in a statement.

Tips from the public led authorities to a suspect at a location in Compton on Dec. 3, authorities said. According to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department statement:

Special Victims Bureau detectives determined Miss Washington was admitted into a local hospital on November 23, 2015. Miss Washington and the baby were released from the hospital on November 26, 2015.

The newborn was found the evening of Nov. 27 after passersby heard a baby crying, authorities said.

“The baby was buried alive on Friday evening near a riverbed located between 136th Street and Slater Avenue, in the city of Compton,” the sheriff's department stated.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the bike path that night:

As they searched, deputies heard a baby’s muffled cry and located a newborn baby girl buried alive under pieces of asphalt and rubble inside a crevice located along the bike path.

Deputies removed the pieces of asphalt and debris and rescued the baby from the crevice.

The baby was wrapped in a blanket and cold to the touch. They checked her vital signs and called for paramedics.

Officials speculated that the girl wouldn't have lived to see another day.

The baby was in good condition at a hospital, authorities said. Her fate was to be determined by the Department of Children and Family Services.

Washington pleaded not guilty yesterday. She was being held in lieu of $1 million bail. She faces life behind bars if she's successfully convicted.
