Jon StojanDesigner Emma Okyere, a vibrant representative of cultural synergy born in the Netherlands to a Ghanaian family and now living in the United States, talks about her trip to the BRICS+ Fashion Summit in Moscow and how tradition and modernity can go hand in hand.

Emma’s diverse background offers a multi-layered perspective that is deeply reflected in the designs of her brand, Modern Natured. Influenced by her roots, she infuses craftsmanship and tradition into every piece. Her collections embody the diversity, innovation, and vibrancy of American culture, where life moves fast and fashion must be adaptable: “Our pieces are designed to be versatile, so they can be styled in a variety of ways for different occasions. Our Modern-Natured fringes are designed for versatility. From an elegant ball gown to a sophisticated beach cover-up, these pieces can be styled as clothing, transformed into a striking statement necklace, or worn in a myriad of other chic ways. Our waist beads tell the rich story of a tradition that has transcended into the mainstream. These pieces don’t just enhance an outfit; they carry cultural significance that makes the wearer feel empowered, seductive, and connected.
BRICS+ Fashion Summit
In the first half of October, Emma visited the Russian capital to participate in the Heritage Exhibition, which was part of the massive BRICS+ Fashion Summit, which brought together more than 100 countries. She believes that cross-cultural exchange is essential in today’s global fashion industry: “When brands from different countries come together, it allows us to share and appreciate each other’s heritage while pushing the boundaries of design innovation. The “Heritage” exhibition exemplified how such exchanges foster collaboration and partnerships, as brands can identify commonalities in heritage or design motifs, brand mission/vision, and even explore new materials or techniques from different cultures. I really appreciate the BRICS+ Fashion Summit for creating this meeting place; it not only strengthens our individual brands but also fosters mutual learning and a deeper appreciation of different cultures.
Today, a trip to Moscow seems to many like a trip to the moon—just as unpredictable and dangerous. Emma was full of worries, but her concerns were not justified: “I approached the BRICS+ Fashion Summit with some skepticism, but trusting my instincts led to an experience that was nothing short of magical. The Summit served as an educational platform, allowing us to showcase our work while engaging in meaningful discussions about the fashion industry. What stood out the most was the remarkable diversity that the BRICS Summit exemplified. I was truly impressed by the diverse group of participants from around the world, including often overlooked countries like Fiji and Mauritius, both of which have so much to offer. I admire how the BRICS+ Fashion Summit embraces diversity and promotes collaboration between different cultures. Moscow itself reflected this fusion of history and modernity, a feeling I felt throughout my time in the city. The warmth and hospitality I received, as well as the passion of the Moscow fashion community, was incredibly inspiring.”
When asked how useful it is to participate in such international events involving developing countries, Emma replied: “Modern Natured has made invaluable connections with like-minded fashion enthusiasts, from Fashion Week founders to journalists from around the world. As Modern Natured becomes an integral part of this community, I look forward to seeing how these connections will drive our growth and impact within the fashion industry.”
Emma Okyere was also impressed by Moscow Fashion Week, which took place on the same dates in October and featured shows by designers from various countries—South Africa, India, China, UAE, Russia, Indonesia, and Costa Rica. “The event, like Moscow Fashion Week, offers designers the opportunity to authentically present their cultures and stories through their collections while learning from and being inspired by their peers from around the world. This collective of designers can greatly enhance the global fashion landscape. I believe that designers should participate in such events to gain exposure and broaden their creative horizons through exposure to other diverse perspectives. Events like Moscow Fashion Week open doors for designers and allow them to present narratives of luxury, sustainability, and innovation to a diverse audience,” the designer said.
