Over the past two years, About Productions has been developing Evangeline, the Queen of Make-Believe, with Los Lobos' Grammy-winning songwriter, Louie Pérez. Written by Pérez and About's artistic director Theresa Chavez and associate director Rose Portillo, the story is set against the backdrop of the 1968 East L.A. student walkouts. It's an odd mirror that reflects back on us, more than four decades later, as California students are pepper-sprayed for demanding decent, affordable education. This is a coming-of-age story, as fresh-faced Evangeline is caught between the burgeoning civil rights movement in her hometown of East L.A. and the glitter of Sunset Strip go-go clubs and the Westside art world. How will she reconcile her own journey with that of her culture, family and community? The multimedia production takes its inspiration from Los Lobos' 1985 song “Evangeline” and draws from Pérez and co-writer David Hidalgo's song catalog, which spans four decades.
