Detroit-born DJ Marc Kinchen, known by his stage name of MK, has been active on the scene since the late ’80s and his “Somebody New” single. He’s seen electronic music bloom and techno explode in his hometown (though he himself is more closely associated with deep house and R&B). He’s performing at All My Friends on Sunday, and his new singles “Body 2 Body” and “There For You” are out now, so we chatted…

L.A. WEEKLY: How do you think your sound has evolved since your start in the late ’80s?

MK: It’s kind of hard to explain  because on one hand my sound has really changed but at the same time, my sound and the essence of my process is still similar to when I started. It has changed though as we all do. Life is all about changes, so it’s the same for music

Your hometown of Detroit is known for techno — what do you think of the electronic music scene there now?

I think it’s great to see Detroit going through such an amazing rebirth as a cultural hub and place for music and art. It’s such an amazing place filled with so much music history. It makes me very happy to see the innovation taking place there.

Are you looking forward to All My Friends? Who will you be checking out?

Totally looking forward to it. There is so much great talent on board for it. Really looking forward to doing my first official b2b with Diplo. We are friends as well so this should be really fun and I will also get to hang out with some of my other homies. I might even surprise Idris on Saturday (shh don’t tell him).

What can we expect from your set? Any new music?

I always like to be spontaneous, so it’s hard for me to say and I always like to surprise people with stuff they have not heard yet. There will be some new music but you need to figure it out on  your own.

When that’s over what’s next for you?

Funny you should ask. I  am putting the final touches on a remix for Black Coffee’s single “La La La” which features Usher… trying to finalize that now. After that, I have a single coming out with Sonny Fodera, a collab with Diplo and one with Green Velvet coming. There is much more in the works but I gotta finish this remix or else. I’m also doing some more touring in the U.S. for the remainder of the year including a few select co-headline dates with Duke Dumont.

All My Friends festival takes place on Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20. Get all of the info at amfamfamf.com.
