Updates: Victim Michael John Baldwin was a surfer known in Venice as “Frosty.” His family posted a memorial photo album here. He was featured in a photo for a 1996 piece by this author about Venice surf-meets-street fashion.

Police now say a man arrested Friday in the area, Mario Lopez, is not a homicide suspect. He was collared for “felony evading” police and has posted bail. The shooting, cops say, does not appear to be gang related and is still under investigation.

A man was found fatally shot in a car near the Del Rey area of the Westside Friday.

Los Angeles police were called to the 5500 block of Margaret Avenue shortly before 7 a.m., LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh said.

Cops found the victim, which Fox 11 News described as a man in his 20s or 30s, with a gunshot wound to the head.

The neighborhood, not far from the Fox Hills mall, is quiet and middle class. But it's also part of turf claimed by the Culver City Boyz gang.

The who or why had not been established yet, however.

Update: Police say the car the man was found in, a Lexus, was reported stolen out of the West L.A. area within the last few weeks.

Detectives are now looking into any possible gang ties to the violence.

Update: #2: Police haven't identified the suspect who was arrested but are IDing the dead man as Michael John Baldwin, 34.
