Noah GalutenWe didn't used to care much whether the person next to us at the bar ordered a Coors Light on draft instead of, say, a Craftsman Fireworks Saison. Now? We're very glad they do. Thanks to Melgard Public House, which opened on Melrose (and Gardner — hence the name) back in January, we beer drinkers are now being rewarded for our good taste. That's because every beer on draft — every beer — is just six dollars. So for snobby pricks like us it is an ideal watering hole, and one where our expensive taste in beer is subsidized by people who think that talking frogs should have a say in their alcohol consumption.
At the moment, that means you can drink a full pint of Anderson Valley Boont Amber Ale, Port Brewing Wipeout IPA, or Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella for just six dollars. That's the same price as Sapporo and Miller Light. Now if you're reading this and thinking to yourself, “hey, but I like Miller Light,” all we need say in return is, “thank you.” But wait, there's more.
Show up to Melgard any day (even weekends) between three and seven p.m., order a beer, and get a free cheese pizza for the table. Show up with four friends and each get a beer — you get one pizza. Show up by yourself? You get your very own pizza. So for those among us who are unemployed, or poor, or both, but have a discerning palate? You can get a good beer and a whole pizza for six dollars. As for the quality of the pizza — pretty darn good for free.
